GLP-1 MEDICATIONS ARE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE
GLP-1 medications act just like the GLP-1 hormones your body naturally makes to help keep your appetite and digestion in check, reduce inflammation, and even lower the chance of cardiovascular disease—helping you kick-start weight loss and live a longer, healthier life. They’re not stimulants and non-habit forming, so there’s no risk of addiction.

GLP-1 medication is a key component of Calibrate’s virtual weight loss program. Our doctors prescribe a variety of GLP-1s, including semaglutide, liraglutide, and dulaglutide. These GLP-1s are often referred to by their brand name, so you may have heard of these FDA-approved medications as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, or Saxenda®, to name a few.
GLP-1s mimic the effect of GLP-1 hormones naturally produced in the gut. These hormones send signals that affect metabolic function by regulating appetite and digestion to feel full faster and for longer, increasing your energy expenditure and maximizing nutrient absorption. These medications also work to regulate the body’s set point—the weight our bodies fight to maintain—and influence blood sugar response and insulin.
If you are enrolled in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Conventional Plan, your copay will be $30-$60/month. Once you reach your out of pocket max, your medication will be covered in full.
If you are enrolled in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Standard HSA Plan, your copay will be covered at 30% co-insurance, which will bring your copay to $30-$150/month. You do not need to satisfy your deductible for coinsurance to apply. Once you reach your out of pocket max, your medication will be covered in full.
If you are enrolled in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Security HSA Plan, your medication will be fully covered. You do not need to satisfy your deductible for your medication to be fully covered.
Standard copays and deductibles apply for all lab services.
The Calibrate program is designed to fit into your life, not the other way around. You won’t be asked to make drastic changes. Instead, you’ll have the support of a Medical Team and a Calibrate coach to make small changes to your habits that lead to big results: 15% weight loss on average.
Here’s a summary of what Calibrate requires of members in their program:
- Take medication as advised by the Calibrate Medical Team, and respond to Medical Check-ins via your Calibrate app every few months
- Attend 15-minute biweekly video coaching sessions
- Use the Calibrate app to track daily food, weight, and energy levels
- Read quick and simple lessons, released every two weeks
Prior to your Calibrate doctor visit, our Medical Team requires you to complete lab work to better inform your medical care.
The lab requirements are as follows:
Within 3 months prior to your doctor visit:
- Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
Within 6 months prior to your doctor visit:
- Hemoglobin A1c
- Lipid Panel
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
In addition, we recommend a fasting insulin test and a C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test (also within 6 months prior to your doctor visit), but this isn’t required.
If Calibrate generates the lab order, the required labs as well as a fasting insulin test and a C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test will automatically be included in your lab request.
If you’ve completed any of these required labs, you can send those results to Calibrate after signing up. If you don’t have these labs, don’t worry—Calibrate will order them for you after you sign up.
You have several convenient options for fulfilling your medications. You may utilize CVS or Walgreens in-person pharmacies for 30-day supplies. You can visit www.myprime.com to find a pharmacy near you. Amazon Pharmacy Home Delivery is available and required for 90-day supplies.
Your employer 7-Eleven has partnered with Calibrate to manage GLP-1 medications. As of 1/1/2024, all new GLP-1 prescriptions for 7-Eleven employees need to be written by Calibrate doctors, which is why you weren’t able to fill your prescription at the pharmacy. Calibrate prescribes GLP-1 medications, like Wegovy® or Saxenda®, as part of a virtual weight loss program. Aside from standard medication and lab copays, this program is fully covered by your employer. Our program combines these medications with personalized video coaching to help you lose weight in a sustainable way.
As soon as you enroll in this free program and your prior authorization is approved, you’ll be back on track to getting your GLP-1 medication.
Yes. A Calibrate doctor will review your medication and dose to determine if it is the most clinically appropriate care plan for you. In order to secure continued access to your GLP-1 medication, you’ll need to obtain a prescription from a Calibrate doctor. If your Calibrate doctor determines that there is another GLP-1 medication that is a better fit for you, our Medical Team will provide you with a new prescription.
At this time Calibrate is only available to individuals who are 18 years of age and older. If you were prescribed a GLP-1 and your claim was rejected at the pharmacy, please call the number on your health plan member ID card. If the Calibrate team can be of any assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. We can be reached at 844-492-1991 and are available from 8am to 8pm ET daily.
What is Step Therapy at Calibrate?
At the initial Doctor Intake appointment, members are provided with the best treatment plan based on their risk profile. This may include participating in at least 90 days of the Calibrate Intensive Lifestyle Program (ILI) before starting GLP-1 medication. Members are categorized into different cohorts based on their diagnosis at enrollment: Cohort 1 (Type 2 Diabetes) may optionally participate in the ILI; Cohort 2 (Obesity with BMI > 30 or Overweight with BMI > 27 and a comorbidity) is required to participate in the ILI for 90 days; Cohort 3 (Newly Discovered Diabetes Diagnosis, pending verification) is also required to participate in the ILI for 90 days unless diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, in which case they follow Cohort 1 guidelines.
During the 90-day ILI period, members must engage with the curriculum, attend coaching appointments, and track their progress in the Calibrate app. After 90 days, the decision to start GLP-1 medication is then made as a shared decision between the member and their clinician, taking into account BMI, medical history, progress, comorbidities, family history, and other risk factors. If a member meets the disengagement criteria at any point during the program, the disenrollment process will be initiated.
