CALIBRATE

Medication Information

Medication is an important part of the Calibrate program. Our goal is to ensure you feel in control with all of the information you need.

If you need any additional support regarding your medication, dosing, or side effects, please reach out to the Medical Team via the Support Center in the Calibrate app.

The Support Team is available via the Support Center of the app to answer any questions about insurance coverage and pharmacies. Please note, our team typically responds within three business days, during business hours Monday-Friday.

Your Calibrate Medical Team has sent your prescription to the pharmacy, and you’ll hear directly from the pharmacy when your prescription is ready for pick-up.

Below you will find dosing instructions and other helpful information for Calibrate medications.

We recommend increasing the dose according to the manufacturer’s instructions so you can achieve maximal impact with the medication as you go through your Calibrate program, and the Medical Team can work towards a thoughtful tapering off of the medication once you achieve your metabolic health and weight loss goals.

Ahead of your visit, please be sure to watch this short video from the Medical Team reviewing some important safety and side effect information.

If you are experiencing side effects, the following guides are a helpful starting point. Side effects typically go away within three to four weeks. If you are experiencing severe side effects, please reach out to us via the Support Center in the Calibrate app and we will get back to you within three business days. In the rare case you have severe side effects that need immediate attention, please seek urgent care.

Your Calibrate provider may recommend Metformin if you have insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or other conditions where Metformin may be helpful. Metformin is a pill that has been approved for type 2 diabetes for decades, and it is inexpensive and widely available. Metformin can help decrease appetite and food intake in addition to decreasing sugar production and absorption in your body.

Metformin works differently than GLP-1 medications, so you may not “feel” it working in your body in the same way that you notice the effects of a GLP-1. While Metformin is a very safe medication, there are some important things that you should be aware of.

  • GI side effects, including nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhea, or belly cramping are fairly common with Metformin. These typically improve after about one week, and taking your Metformin with food helps to reduce the risk of these side effects.
  • A metallic taste in the mouth is also possible with Metformin. This typically improves after a few weeks.
  • Lactic acidosis is an incredibly rare potential side effect of Metformin. If you are taking certain medications such as topiramate or warfarin, Metformin may not be appropriate for you. Be sure to tell your Calibrate provider about all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements that you are taking.

  • Chronic use of metformin (more than 4 years) has been associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency. If you have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency, please discuss this with your Calibrate doctor.
  • Men who are planning to conceive a child within the next 3 months should not take metformin as there may be a risk to the baby. Metformin can be stopped abruptly and does not need to be tapered.

We know you’ll have some questions relating to your program, and we’re here to help. We’ve compiled the most common questions below.

In case of an emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

Our standard response time is three business days from receiving your message, but please know our Support Team and Medical Team work hard to get back to all members as quickly as possible. Please note that follow-up messages will delay response as they cause messages to be sent to the back of the queue.

If you miss a day of your medication, it’s not a problem.

For medications that are taken weekly (Ozempic, Wegovy and Trulicity), you can still inject your medication up to 48 hours after your usual injection day and proceed with your regular schedule. There should be a minimum of five days between injections.

If you miss a dose of medications that is taken daily (Saxenda and Rybelsus), just return to your regular schedule the next day.

NOTE:  If you experience a lapse in medication for more than 2 weeks and you are taking Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic, or Trulicity or if the lapse is more than 1 week and you are taking Saxenda or Rybelsus, please send the Medical Team a message for guidance on restarting your medication as dosage adjustments might be needed.

Absolutely!  Calibrate is focused on sustainable weight loss and healthy habits that can be applied while away from home.

Medications can be kept in an insulated lunch bag with ice packs or stored at room temperature depending on the length of travel.  See below for specific timelines for your medication.

You do not need a letter for travel when flying with your medications. Letters are only required for those who need special screening with disabilities. Please do note that you should declare your medications to the TSA officer and if you are bringing additional “unopened” pens that need to be refrigerated, you can see more guidance about traveling with ice packs here

It’s very common for people to lose weight in slightly irregular patterns. Weight may not change week to week, and that’s OK. If your weight stays the same for more than four weeks, you may be in a plateau. Once you’ve reached your goal weight, your weight will ultimately plateau at a new, healthy, set point (and that’s a good thing). Even if your weight plateaus during the program before you’ve reached that end goal, it doesn’t mean you can’t continue to lose weight. We encourage you to continue the medication and follow the Four Pillars of Metabolic Health closely so that you can achieve your metabolic health and weight loss goals.

Please use a sharps container to store pens and needles. You can purchase red sharps containers at pharmacies and on mail order websites. If a sharps container is not available, you can use an empty laundry detergent bottle, coffee can, or any puncture-resistant container with a secure lid that is large enough to hold the pen. Please make sure to keep the container out of the reach of children and pets, and label it clearly.

The following links have information about the various options you have to dispose of the sharps containers to ensure sanitation workers and others won’t be at risk for needle sticks during disposal.
