What is a medication shortage?

Medication shortages occur when demand for a certain drug outstrips the manufacturer’s supply of that drug, or in the case of GLP-1 medications, supply of the injection pens. When there’s an insufficient supply of medication or devices to utilize the medication, pharmacies and patients are impacted. Pharmacies and prescribers cannot predict or prevent shortages, and manufacturers are the only party with the power to resolve them.
